HANSON FARM HISTORY
35755 200th Street, Battle Lake, MN
The land my sister and brother and I are offering for sale has been in our family since 1932.
It was owned by our grandfather, Edwin Julius (E. J.) Hanson, and then our parents, Nels
and Tilda (Glesne) Hanson – all lifelong residents of Otter Tail County.
On this land, in the house our grandfather built in 1940, we grew up. We ate food grown in
our mother’s garden. We had fresh cream from the cows our father milked. We learned to
drive on our lovable Ford tractor. We enjoyed our ‘slough’ – watching its wildlife, playing
along its shores, and skating on its ice.
When the farm became ours in 2000, my brother raised crops, and we used it as a gathering
place for our families, cousins, and friends. As third-generation owners, we made
improvements and cared for it honoring and respecting our family history.
While it is true that land endures, owners come and go. Our family has owned land in Otter
Tail County for 154 years. Just a few miles southeast of our farm, our great-great
grandmother owned 40 acres that she purchased in 1871. In the adjacent township to the
west, our great-grandfather owned 160 acres that he homesteaded in 1872.
As for 35755 200th Street, which has been in our family for 93 years, it is bittersweet for us to
admit that it is our time to go. It is with gratitude and fondness that we will forever
remember its quiet setting, its woods, its open fields, and its picturesque views…
